Safety & Ethics
Viewing Pennsylvania's wild elk responsibly.
Keep your distance
Stay at least 100 yards from elk. Use binoculars or a zoom lens for a closer look without pressuring the animal.
Never approach or feed
Feeding alters behavior and endangers both elk and people. A fed elk often becomes a dangerous elk.
Stay in your vehicle
Your car acts as a blind. Elk tolerate vehicles far more than people on foot — stay inside near popular viewing areas.
Mind the season
During the fall rut (Sept–Oct) bulls are aggressive; in spring cows fiercely protect calves. Give extra space then.
Respect private land
Many sightings occur near private property. Obey posted signs and never trespass for a photo.
Keep pets leashed
Dogs can provoke elk. Leave pets at home or keep them closely leashed behind fencing at viewing areas.
These guidelines follow the Pennsylvania Game Commission's recommendations for elk viewing in the Benezette area.
